Pre-wash the fabric: Pre-washing the fabric before sewing will remove any sizing, reducing the risk of shrinkage and preventing color bleeding (when colors run together).

Press well with an iron: Ironing is essential, especially when making a quilt. Pressing seams to the side or down the middle will help ensure perfect points and matching corners. Even for non-quilt projects, ironing will smooth out the fabric and create a more polished finish.

Adjust the tension: If the fabric is gathering, puckering, or appearing tight and uneven during sewing, the tension is likely too tight and should be loosened (by lowering the numbers on the sewing machine tension dial). Conversely, if there are loops on the back of the fabric or the thread is visible on the underside, the tension is too loose and should be tightened (by increasing the numbers on the tension dial).

Trim as you go: Trimming each piece of fabric after sewing can make the construction process easier, as the fabric may warp or become distorted as it is handled. When quilting, try trimming each piece to the desired size before assembling the blocks.

Use a ¼-inch seam: Accurate or "scant" ¼-inch seams are crucial for matching up quilt blocks successfully. Use a special sewing foot or the markings on the needle plate to ensure your seam allowance is precise.
